Prayer Guide

Every year as a Church, we come together for 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting. The aim of the fast is to draw closer to God, seek Him first and trust that His plans and will for our lives would be fulfilled.

Jesus taught His disciples how to pray,

Matthew 6:9-13

“This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. ’”

The best way to effectively use this prayer as an outline, is to break it up into different segments. Below is a basic guideline to each segment:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Your name;

The first thing to do is to recognize God as your father.

"Thank you God, You are my Father, You are a good Father who gives good gifts to Your children (James 1:17). You are a father who loves me, leads me, protects me, trains me in your Word, a father who corrects me, a father who loves to be with His children. I am Your child, I love You, as a child looks up to his father, so I look to You as my father; as a child listens to the wise council of their dad, so I submit myself to Your authority. As a father gives his authority to his children, I thank You for giving me authority and backing me with Your power and protection."

Hallowed be Your name;

To hallow means to honour, revere and highly esteem.

"Your name is above all names. Your name is my righteousness. Nothing is more powerful than Your name and I call on Your name today. Your name is greater and more powerful than anything I have to face or deal with in my life. Let Your name be exalted above all else in my life. Your name is peace. I have peace in everything I do. Your name is healing. My body is healed and protected from sickness and disease. You are my provider and I have no lack."

Your kingdom come, Your will be done.

"Today I lay down my agenda. I choose Your will for my life. Let Your will be done in my life today. Living in Your will is what I desire and the best thing for my life. Thank you that You have saved me and today I aim to please You in all that I do. Heaven has all I need to live a godly life. Your kingdom has everything that I need."

Give us today our daily bread.

"Jesus You are the bread of life. You are more than enough. Today I ask You to meet my every need.

Spiritual needs - You fill me so that my soul is satisfied, I look for fulfilment. Your Word fills and sustains me. I thank you that I am spiritually maturing day by day.

Physical needs - I pray for good health and healing and offer myself as a living sacrifice to You (Romans 12:1-2).

Emotional needs - I pray for a sound mind. I pray for emotional stability. Help me not to be ruled by my feelings and emotions. Enable me to use my emotions to do Your will.

Financial needs - I pray You are providing for my every need so that I can live a blessed life and be a blessing to those around me. I pray for Your divine favour and provision over my life and as I trust You."

And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

"Thank you that I am forgiven and made right because of Jesus. I want to live with a clean heart before you. As David prayed, “search my heart Oh God”, I ask you to search me Lord and remove anything unclean or bitter in my heart. Please forgive me for things in my life which don't line up with Your ways. I forgive those who have hurt me, used me, and said all sorts of things about me. I release them into your hands. Please reveal Your love to them and bless them as you have blessed me."

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

"I know temptation is waiting to derail me, so I ask the Holy Spirit to give me discernment so I am able to identify temptation, and strengthen me to resist temptation in Jesus’ name. Your Word says that you provide a way of escape when we are tempted (1 Corinthians 10:13). I pray the blood of Jesus over my life and I am protected from the evil one. I put on the full armour of God so that I can stand in the time of testing.

Today is the day You have made, I will rejoice in it. I choose joy for my life today and from the rising of the sun until the setting of the same, Your name will be praised."

Give thanks to God for all He has done for you.
